ZooLights at the National Zoo (through January 3, 2026)

Stroll through the Smithsonian’s National Zoo at night, transformed by over one million environmentally-friendly LED lights and more than 100 giant, glowing animal lanterns. While the live animals are resting, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, sip hot cocoa, explore the new winter-themed maze, and take a spin on the Conservation Carousel. U.S. Botanic Garden (through January 4, 2026)

Need to escape the chill? This is a stunning indoor exhibition that features detailed models of iconic DC landmarks crafted entirely from plant materials. The National Christmas Tree (Through January 1, 2026)

A spectacular, free, and accessible DC tradition. Located on The Ellipse near the White House, the majestic National Christmas Tree is the centerpiece of the Pathway of Peace, which is lined with 58 smaller trees beautifully decorated by students representing every U.S. state and territory. Meadowlark's Winter Walk of Lights (through January 4, 2026)

This elegant, half-mile walk-through experience transforms the beautiful Meadowlark Botanical Gardens into a dazzling trail. The displays feature lighted trees, fountains, and animated nature themes, perfect for a cozy date night or a family outing. You can warm up with a hot beverage (with or without spirits), or grab a s'mores kit to enjoy by the fire pits before you leave. The entire paved trail is also wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Christmas Illuminations at Mount Vernon (December 20-21, 2025)

Experience history lit up for the holidays! George Washington's estate celebrates the season with a uniquely 18th-century atmosphere. The event includes appearances by George and Martha Washington, 18th-century dancing, costumed characters, and visits with ‘Aladdin the Camel’! The evening culminates in a brilliant fireworks display over the Potomac River.

Bull Run Festival of Lights (Through January 4, 2026)

An absolute classic for the family! This massive drive-through light show offers 2.5 miles of animated, colorful displays that you can enjoy from the warmth and comfort of your car. After the drive, the fun continues with a festive Holiday Village and Carnival (additional fees apply), where you can ride the Ferris wheel, grab a snack, or snuggle up by a bonfire.

Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens (Through January 4, 2026)

A classic walk-through experience that showcases a million colorful LED lights handcrafted into original works depicting flowers, animals, and other natural scenes throughout 50 acres of the botanical gardens. This award-winning event requires advance tickets and is perfect for a truly immersive and peaceful holiday stroll.

Festival of Lights at the Washington DC Temple - Kensington (Through January 1, 2026)

This beautiful and tranquil display features over half a million twinkling lights across the temple grounds. It’s a free community event that includes an international nativity display and nightly musical performances inside the Visitors’ Center. While entry is free, be sure to plan for the required timed parking pass.

Winter Lights Festival - Gaithersburg (Through December 31, 2025)

Get ready for a huge light adventure from the comfort of your vehicle! This festival features a massive 3.5-mile route through Seneca Creek State Park, packed with over 450 animated and illuminated displays.
